Working Assitance Dog and Handler get attacked

This is an email I received from Miram Mas who is a very good friend of mine and Founder of a non-profit organization called Canines With A Cause that is dedicated to training dogs for people with mobility related disabilities. This dog is owned by Lisa who is also a trainer of assistance dogs. Java is Lisa’s own personal assistance dog as Lisa has MS and depends on Java to help her on the days when she really needs her. The litter that Java was carrying at the time were meant to become assistance dogs also. This event occurred on 21 February, 2005 at 1pm.

Hello Randy,

Yesterday I got some pretty bad news from my friend Lisa who has Java, Noah's mom.

Java had been attacked by an Airedale really badly. This happened outside a Wal-Mart in Midland, while Java was wearing her Service Dog cape, ID, and leashed. Lisa saw the dog off leash coming towards them and she asked Java to go down which she did.

This dog attacked Java on her back and later on her stomach. Lisa got bit 3 times while trying to get this dog off of Java.

Meanwhile the owner of the dog was at a distance, never offered to help Lisa who fell on the ground trying to get the dogs to separate. When Lisa asked the guy to control his dog, he called the dog but failed to put him on leash. Then the dog returned for a 2nd attack on Java.

Java was rushed to the vet (after they had a chance to take down the car license plate number of the owner of the Airedale). This happened at 1 PM and Lisa phoned at 7:30 PM mentioning they could still not stop Java's bleeding and were unsure if she would make it.

Meanwhile the vet bills climbed.

If you could, please do a prayer for Java it will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Miriam
UPDATE MAY 2005: Java did loose all the puppies because of the attack. Her assistance dog certification had to be removed as she is now unable to work. Still terrified at the sight of a dog and totally changed. Lisa has now a new puppy from the same linage as Java that comes from the US with good potential for seizure alert (like Java). The presence of this puppy is non-threatening for Java and is if anything helping her to some degree. We are still unsure if Java will be able to fully recover from this ordeal at this time.

Thank you for all the support received regarding this issue.
